overview Dr. Hooman Sadri-Ardekani is currently the director of male fertility research program at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) and Department of Urology. He has been a fellowship trained male reproductive medicine clinician since 2003. After couple of years of providing clinical services and serving as the director of a reproductive medicine center in Tehran (Avicenna Infertility Center), he sought to learn more about reproductive biology and joined the University of Amsterdam where he got his PhD in December 2011. He has since established the first in vitro propagation system for human Spermatogonial Stem Cells (SSCs) (JAMA 2009 and 2011) which has been recognized as a milestone in autotransplantation of human SSCs (Nature Reviews Urology February 2010). He has received several awards based on his innovations in the field of male reproductive biology; including the AMC Young scientist publication 2009, The 11th Royan International Research Award in Stem Cells and Developmental Biology in 2010, the Jan Swammerdam Fertility Prize 2010 and The 17th Razi research Festival award on medical science 2012). In January 2012 he moved to WFIRM to establish male fertility research program. Dr. Sadri-Ardekani is currently practicing as a clinician in Urology clinic and Wake Forest Center for Reproductive Medicine. He is running a national comprehensive referral program to preserve fertility in high risk infertility patients in different ages, from childhood to adolescence to adults; including but not limited to those with cancer, Klinefelter syndrome, spinal cord injury, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. SYNOPSIS OF AREA OF INTEREST: *Male reproductive medicine and biology *Stem cell therapies for male infertility *Tissue engineering 3D human testis organoid platform for in vitro spermatogenesis, androgen replacement, toxicology and drug screening DETAILED AREA OF INTEREST: Dr.Sadri-Ardekani current laboratory’s research focuses on the dynamics of male germ lineage development, which establishes the pool of Spermatogonial Stem Cells (SSCs) and the mechanisms that regulate SSC self-renewal and differentiation, ensuring continuous sperm production. His lab is actively investigating the feasibility and safety of translating In Vitro Spermatogenesis and SSC transplantation to the male fertility clinic.
